run!
I have always been interested in road running ever since the compulsory merentas desa (cross country) days in primary school. If there was a run organised in my hometown (or anywhere my dad would be willing to drive us to), you can almost be certain I was in the crowd, striding my ass off. I’ve ran on the Sepang F1 track, all around Selangor, twice at Dataran Merdeka, and most recently in Bangi.

*for illustration purposes only
I never won any of them though, and I don’t expect to (although I did win a hamper via a lucky draw after one run, but that’s a different story). The motivation for my persistent participation is partly for the free stuff I’ll get after most races such as the t-shirts, sports drinks, magazines among others, but the main reason, I guess is because of my fascination to the human endurance, especially mine.
So, let us examine my typical race progression.
First 5 minutes: Everything’s looking good. My pacing and breathing pattern are top notch.
5 minutes later: Arghh! Cramp in my legs. Both sides of my abdomen are aching.
Inside 15 minutes: (Walking gingerly) Walking for a bit won’t hurt my time THAT much.
Next 5 minutes: (Still walking) The girls from the other category passes by. (Runs) Ego alert.
Next 10 minutes: The girls from the primary school category overtakes.
Later: What? That’s only the half-way mark? You gotta be kidding me.
Then: Yes! Just what I’ve been waiting for, the 100Plus stall. Now I’ll get to the finish line in no time.
Much Later: Sees the finish line. Runs in style (while earlier contestants are heading to their car to go home).

The Penang Marathon I mentioned is still a long way off and it’s considerably far away. But hey, I’m just throwing it into the air. Maybe we could do another trip to the north?
