Think Before You Post

This is a public service announcement for the kids out there. In this day and age it is considered almost peculiar not to have an online identity. To establish an online presence, we sign up to social networking sites such as myspace, friendster and orkut; create blogs to textually convey our train of thought.

We post pictures of ourselves, our family and friends; and our houses and pets. We upload our videos on YouTube to share that trip to the beach with the world.

Bulletin Board

Whilst all that is dandy and well, we mustn’t let one thing to escape our conscious mind, that almost everything posted on the internet can be observed by virtually everybody in the world.

While the majority of people online are nice and sensible individuals, there’s also an unfortunate number of the threatening and disturbed.

Everyone Knows Your Name

Admittedly, posting stuff on the internet can be very enjoyable, however my advice to you is to try to be as anonymous as you can. Try to be a little obscure when describing you current and future whereabouts. Don’t publish your details such as your address or phone number, and do consider the consequences before posting any pictures (especially those embarrassing ones of yourselves or others). As it is with the nature of the internet, all of these don’t really go away even when you delete them.

One more thing, be extra mindful when corresponding with individuals online. That person might just not be who they claim to be.

So to summarise:
1. Be anonymous.
2. Don’t give out your location.
3. Leave out personal details.
4. Don’t post any pictures that can lead you to some difficulties in the future.
5. Be careful when “talking” online as people can falsify their identity.

The internet can be a dangerous playground.

Be safe.

And look both ways before crossing the street.

And brush your teeth before going to bed.

Thank you.
